Three of our artists
at the Art Stable Gallery are accomplished pastel painters and all three will
be showing in the prestigious Pastels By Invitation 2012 exhibition. This
by-invitation-only show is comprised of an intimate group of internationally
recognized pastelists. The paintings of the Art Stable's Sarah Fielding-Gunn,
Kelly Milukas, and Nancy Whitin will be included in the show at the Creative
Arts Center, 154 Crowell Rd, Chatham, MA. Other acclaimed pastelists participating
in the show include Albert Handell, Anne Heywood, Fred Somers, Frank
Federico, to name just a few.
Technically, pastel is powdered pigment, rolled into round or square
sticks and held together with methylcellulose, a non-greasy binder. When
protected by fixative and glass, pastel is the most permanent of all media, for
it never cracks, darkens or yellows.
A galaxy of
artists, Copley, Delacroix, Millet, Manet, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, Redon,
Vuillard, Bonnard, Glackens, Whistler and Hassam, just to list the more
familiar names, used pastel. Degas was the most prolific user of pastel, and
its champion, for he raised it to the full brilliance of oil.
